John, somewhere I saw a suggestion that a number of P1 bikes would be coming from S.A. Any confirmation of this? Cheers, John |

Yes, but we are planning the introduction of P1 machines for the Southern Classic. |

G'day John! It was planned that several Period 1 bikes would enter the Victorian Historic Titles at Broadford in March but HMRAV did not include us in the Supp Regs and were reluctant to provide space in their program for designated P1 races so we have renegotiated a possible place in the Southern Classic program in October. It is likely there will be up to 6 P1 bikes ready to enter if HMRAV can get their act together. For sure, at the SA Historic State Titles at Mac Park in late December there will be designated Period 1 racing. By then there may be a couple more P1 bikes ready to go as well.

Thanks for clarifying the situation Ian. Personally I find it disappointing that you could not be fitted in. I guess because normally none turn up in Victoria so we were probably caught with our pants down. Please tell me about the bikes. Cheers, John |

G'day again John! There were six Period 1 bikes ready to go for the 2007 SA State Titles last December before Mac Park became unserviceable and the meeting was cancelled. There was a 1000cc Indian, two 500cc Triumphs, a 750cc JAP, a 350cc AJS and a 350cc Douglas. In the pipeline right now are another 500cc Triumph, a 1000cc Big X, a 500cc Rudge and a 250cc Levis. There are rumors of several other bikes on the go as well.
At the 2006 Australian Historic Titles at Mac Park four Period 1 bikes raced in a series of handicaps which were popular with both competitors and spectators.
HMCRRSA and Mount Gambier MCC reckon that 5 Period 1 bikes on the grid is viable for a dedicated race and my preference is for as many of these as possible to be handicap races to cater for the wide range of performance in the class and to keep in touch with the historic roots of pioneer racing.

Have you thought maybe you should come to WA for the Nationals. We dont have any Period 1s over here but it would be good to see you and it could stimulate some activity with our guys for the future.

G'day Alan! I would seriously consider coming to WA if there was a chance to race my 1912 Triumph with some other Period 1 bikes. However, talking within the P1 network on this side of the desert there are too few starters to make it viable. My guess is that only Ken Lucas (750cc JAP) and me would be able to make it. I will however, canvas the others in the loop and see what they reckon. A best senario would be 4 P1 bikes from Vic/SA if Lindsay Urquart and David Wain were interested in making the trip.

Hi Ian, thanks for the information on the bikes. Was it you I saw at Broadford in the seniors meeting last year? It was a Triumph that caused my heart to start beating again. Cheers, John |

G'day again John! Yes I did ride the Senior's Meetings at Broadford these past couple of years. In fact, it was at the "Old Fart's Races" at Mac Park in 2002 that the old girl had her first outing since being rebuilt. The Mount Gambier MCC have been fantastic in encouraging these old bikes back onto the track and slowly but surely others are being prepared. They sure draw a crowd on race day!

Ian, at that Broadford meeting I had every intention of finding you to have a chat but when I finally got round to it that end garage had an empty space where once was a beautiful bike. Next time I'll be quicker. Cheers, John |
