Did not want to clutter up discussion of "c"
class but maybe a bit relevent
I went to IOM in 1997 and stayed with Danny Shimmin who came out here in early 90's
He rode a bored and stroked G50 to I think 650 cc in the Singles TT and finished 5th against exotic machinery, BMW's and Jap things from memory.
an extradanary feat. What a party at his pub afterwards, with Joey Dunlop & co popping in an Bill Swallow staying there. Danny took me everwhere that Arthur Wheeler Didnt. HIs engineer was Vern ??? who lived off the Sulby straight. They had the G50 in a monoshock frame but it would not handle. Vern worked all hours to change to a ??? conventional frame to meet the deadline . You could hear Danny coming POP POP POP against the modern sceamers. Sadly Danny lost his life next year on an Aermacchi. Oil leaks
Hope someone is interested, This topic doesnt get much input what about it you old guys ?
I was 76 last Sunday and can still remember !

There was an old guy who ran a motorcycle shop in Elizabeth Street, Melbourne - died a while back. He said that he wondered why anyone wanted a motocycle over 500cc. We were all running hot 650 Triumphs then. These days I've come to believe he was right.
My mate has won the Historic Championship several times. It cost him more to race historics than it did when he had his kid on superbikes. He recently sold off all his historic bikes - he just doesn't want to know any more.
I don't know whether Class C is the answer, but historic racing has bred machines that don't look anything like they did 'in the era'.
My comments obviously upset 'Snoozer', but it seems the guys can't do anything in historic racing without cheating.
A cross period class for 500cc singles would at least keep them honest.
Incidently the bike my mate won the championship with several times, was supposed to be a Triumph. It did actually have one triumph part in it - the cylinder head. GET REAL!

Alan, fair go I get everywhere I want in Historics and I dont cheat. I think you need to re-phrase it. But I agree distortion of reality is a factotr. But Bruce has stared a nice topic, lets try and keep it that way. I rode on the Darley circuit in the 70's but it was not a meeting. It would be nice to get some scheme going where these circuits are documented at the site to add to the tourism spots or topics. It may generate some interest. Who could start that???/ Bruce maybe?

Without wishing to bag Alan Cotterell I think he needs to get up to speed a bit with the rules etc. To say guys are cheating is to state that log books are totally ineffective, also that officials arent doing their job properly remembering that a machine examiner/scrutineer is also an eligibilty scrutineer.
It will be interesting at Winton to see how many get excluded through being ineligible.
As you know John we were both at the Island Classic as was Ross Martin and there werent too many bikes that were seriously wrong and those that werent quite right were followed up on.

I suggest cheating is in the eye of the beholder. A few years back Les Ayton rode Barry Oliver's 350 Manx several times in historic races with a nice big dose of nitromethane. Can you show me in the rules where it is banned? Do you believe using it is cheating? It was actually used 'in the era', in particular our old mate Kenny used it in the Jesser Triumph which spread its guts at Mallala and brought down several other A Graders.
Perhaps 'cheating' is the wrong word - perhapds 'unsporting' is the right one!

P.S. the 350 Manx on nitro was faster than any 500 - how fast can you afford to go?
