Period 5 events have disappointingly few entrants. This is due to the capacity limits of the two classes—up to 350 cc and unlimited.
This has led to—
1. very few contestants in the up to 350 class. (only TZs and LCs bother entering —no other bike is competitive.)
2. there are plenty of mid sized four strokes but they are not competitve with the large four strokes up to 1100 cc and so don't bother entering (the speed differential could also put a few off)

SUGGESTION:
—the smaller class capacity limit for period 5 be increased to 600 cc.

This would lead to more entrants and better racing (for reasons 1. and 2. above) It is also more reflective of the era—few manufacturers were building mid-size bikes to the traditional 500 cc capacity by 1980 (there were plenty of 550s and 600s) The Yamahas wouldn't need to worry—they'd would still be competive.

I suggest a new class could be a combined periods 500cc four stroke single cylinder class. This would encourage SR500 Yamahas, B40 BSA, Ducati 450, any sound of singles bike under 500cc, and any special using a speedway motor.

I agree that a 600cc limit for the small capacity P5 class would be good, as it would bring in 500cc Suzukis. A TZ350 Yamaha should beat any other P5 bike on Winton - that's what happened in the seventies, when Blakey used to leave the TZ750 at home. The lap record was held by a TZ350, (and that included Z900s - actually slower)

Is the idea to equalise the bikes? I would have to agree with a 350cc 2 stroke v's up to 600cc 4 stroke being relatively = Say youve got an old SR 500 but bored it etc over the years it would be easier to not race than spend all the extra to bring it back to a 500cc? Anyway isnt a 350cc 2 stroke equivalent to a 700cc 4 stroke? Just questions and ideas...

re: 350 class in period 5

I suggested 600 cc makes more sense than 350 cc as the capacity limit for the smaller period 5 bikes.

I suppose there could be an argument for, say, a 700 cc capacity limit (as per your point, Keith).

The important thing is to recognise that the the current 350 cc limit in period 5 should be scrapped. A capacity limit increase, would lead to better racing and more entrants.

David, I believe realistically the P5 Junior class capacity limits should be 500cc for two strokes, and 750cc for four strokes. A TZ350 should win every time!

The P5 Senior class capacity limits should be 750cc for two strokes, and unlimited four strokes. (there aren't any over 750cc two strokes anyway).

The bit about 500cc single cylinder four strokes is just my new hobby horse. Sorry for confusing the issue, I just reckon we'd all be better off racing singles.

I can say that the HMRAV has adopted this suggestion and we have now run two meetings with the 600cc as the split. Nobody has noticed any problems and it seems to provide good racing.

You should look at what has been happening in NSW for years.
Run up to 250 Period 4 and Period 5 together.
This provides an excellent entry level motorcycle in the Yamaha RDLC 250.

It also allows riders to race two classes to increase numbers.
Many NSW riders race both 250 and 350 forgotten era machines. Either RDLCs or TZs. It is a lot cheaper to race if your spare parts fit both of your race bikes.

I have not been entering Victorian meetings these last few years specifically because you do not give me the oportunity to race both my 250 and 350.
Why should I go all the way to Victoria for so few races.
Yesterday I had 11 races at the PCRA championships round 5.
I was entered for 14 races at PCRA round 4.

Good Comment, however I suggest it's still important to run full grids wherever possible.
While the two classes might give some riders two rides in different machines, I suggest promoters should still consider what pulls a crowd.
